Behind the Needles: Mom and Business Owner

Wynnafred Bonde about me

What is it like owning a business while also trying to take care of my son who is almost 6 months old? Well, I'm not sure that I am the best person to ask about this since I know that I work too much, as does everyone in my family. But I can tell you about how I try to mitigate/ balance my work and life to the best of my ability.

First off, I have a "ideal week" chart that hangs on the office door, and I try to keep work stuff in the office when I can so that when I do get to work for an hour or two in the morning I can close the door and my wife still knows what I am doing that day even if we didn't have a chance to talk about it. ( I will add the PDF of the chart at the bottom if you want to have a look )

Trying to have some time set aside to do work is also important, and my wife watches our son while I do so that I can get what I want to get done accomplished. That's not to say that all our days look like that, or that I even always get everything done because sometimes there's too much house stuff to get done, or the boy needs more meals. Its really dependent on the flow of the house/ family during the day. Naps aren't normally long enough to be productive, but when he goes down for the night I try to squeeze in some more work so that I feel I have accomplished enough for the day.

I still try to make sure we eat together as a family, and that I leave some time like the weekends for family and I don't always work. Though some Saturdays I do a few hours of work if C. is home to watch our boy and I feel it is needed. Other than that I squeeze in what work I can when I can, though I make sure that it doesn't take away from me spending time with my family as much as I can. I feel like I already take over the house with all my supplies, so I make sure work projects go in the office so that they are out of the way.

I want my family to be able to say that I was there and I supported them in what they needed not that I was home but never there for them as a mum. But really as this is our first baby we find ourselves just trying our best to be the best parents that we can be while also teaching independence, it does make me feel like I should try harder and be more thankful. All we can do is our best, and we have to make sure to take care of ourselves as we can't pour from empty cups. So work gives me something to work on, and put myself into that I feel accomplished about at the end of the day.

What is something that makes you feel accomplished and "fills" your preverbal cup?
